ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday sought details of the persons detained at internment centres across the country.
As hearing resumed in the missing persons case, the three-judge bench chaired by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan said the need to know under what laws such individuals had been detained at the internment centres had become pressing. The court then adjourned the proceedings for three weeks.
Last week, Commission on Enforced Disappearance head Justice (r) Javed Iqbal had offered to brief the Supreme Court judges in their chambers on the missing persons cases, particularly those related to Balochistan.
Earlier, Deputy Attorney General Ilyas Bhatti submitted a report on behalf of the commission before the apex court. The report said the commission had disposed of 3,000 cases of missing persons while 1,577 cases were still pending. It said Justice (r) Javed Iqbal, also chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), has specified one-hour time every day to the cases of missing persons.
Appearing before the bench, Defence of Human Rights Chairperson Amina Masood Janjua complained that the commission had refused to examine the cases referred by her. She requested the bench to appoint a new head of the commission.
